Primary and Secondary Sources

Obtain historical data is a key skill in learning history in the classroom. Historical data comes from a variety of sources, including: library and museum collections, historic sites, historical photos, journals, diaries, eyewitness accounts, newspapers, and the like; documentary films, oral testimony from living witnesses, censuses, tax records, city directories, statistical compilations, and economic indicators.

This sample task instructs students (fifth graders) how to identify and to examine primary and secondary historical sources. This task can be adapted for older students in order to review skill/ standard.
